Chapel Haven Schleifer Center celebrated the grand opening of the new UARTS storefront Feb. 8, 2019 in the heart of Westville Village.

The new UARTS store at 12 Fountain Street, in Westville Village, is also the new home for Chapel Haven’s Center for Employment and Service Opportunities, led by executive director Danielle Chiaraluce.

New Haven Mayor Toni Harp, State Representative Patricia Dillon and Lizzy Donius, director of the Westville Village Renaissance Alliance, joined Chapel Haven President Michael Storz, the UARTS artisans and UARTS Program Manager Stephanie Berberich and Heather McDonald in cutting the ribbon on the new location.

The doors opened and friends, families and staff poured in for refreshments, to purchase items made by the artists to enjoy demonstrations such as weaving.

Initially, the UARTS store will be open to the public on Fridays.

“We are excited to have a location in the heart of our community that champions employment for our adults,” said President Michael Storz. “This has been long in the planning and has been very well received by the entire Westville community.”

“While the many handcrafted items now available in this new outlet make beautiful, meaningful gifts, I’m mindful of the gift built into the creation of each item,” Mayor Harp said. “Each is the byproduct of the imagination, creativity and diligent effort of its creator.”

The ribbon cutting attracted great media coverage.

This new location will serve as UARTS’ retail presence and maker space, with artisan-made scarves, men’s ties, home decor, and other seasonal products made by our artisans for sale. Here artisans will have the opportunity to hone their entrepreneurial interests, and also learn customer service and retail skills.

Lizzy Donius, who helped secure UARTS’ new location, said “This is a very exciting day – so glad to have this storefront, this public-facing space for Chapel Haven – in the heart of Westville. It has already transformed this block and we’re not even an hour in.”
