Getting to the castle at Sleeping Giant
Chapel Haven Schleifer Center was thrilled to participate for the second year in a row in the Accessibility Accelerator | Chapel Haven Schleifer Center | Paratrek Universal Expedition – USA II.
Chapel Haven Schleifer Center served as the base point for hikes and treks in our beautiful region that took place Monday, July 25-Thursday, July 28. Hikes took place at Lake Wintergreen and Sleeping Giant State Park.

This was a truly memorable experience of joining together to hike with limited barriers!
CHSC SAIL student Andrew Burbank was thrilled to get out of his power wheelchair and into a trekker to hike to the top of Sleeping Giant State Park.
“It was fabulous,” he told a reporter from the New Haven Register. “I’m living my dream, that’s all I can say.”
CHSC Community member Kerry Wilson said she would not normally attempt such an arduous hike because of knee problems. She described the scenery and experience as “unbelievable.”
Getting prepared to hit the trails!
Starting Monday, July 25 and culminating Thursday with a celebratory dinner, a core team of about 40 CHSC adults, staff, friends and family hiked and trekked using team member’s’ respective physical strengths, mental toughness, and diverse abilities as the world is indeed #AccessibleTogether. We were joined by Jamie Lassner of Accessibility Accelerator and Omer Zur and Shir Segal from Paratrek! Ry Ry the Wellness Guy and other CHSC staff assisted.
Below is the schedule of events that took place through the week:
Monday, 10 a.m. to noon – Meet in CHSC courtyard; introduction to the team and trekker, training, practice with walks in our neighborhood
Tuesday, 9 a.m. – Meet in CHSC courtyard and spend the day hiking scenic Lake Wintergreen. Lunch on the trail!
Attaining goals are a key part of the hike!
Wednesday, 9 a.m. – Meet in CHSC courtyard and spend the day hiking, lunch on the trail, hiking destination Lake Wintergreen
Thursday, 9 a.m. – Meet in CHSC courtyard and spend the day hiking a local destination, Sleeping Giant State Park
Thursday, 5:30 p.m – CHSC courtyard, celebration dinner
