We put out the call for help in raising $5,000 to Grow Our Special O and our wonderful families and friends answered!

We are delighted to announce that during The Great Give, administered by the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven May 3-4, we raised $8,873 from 58 donors, exceeding our goal!

We are so grateful!

Survey results

We are also excited to announce that through an online survey, we learned that adults and families would love to see Chapel Haven Schleifer Center launch a Special Olympic floor hockey program.

Floor hockey came in first in the survey, with golf in second. The other two sports proposed are cycling and volleyball. It’s not too late! Click here to get your opinion in: Survey

Next steps

The next step will be training coaches, gathering supplies & recruiting athletes for the floor hockey season which will begin in January 2024 and run congruent with Traditional Basketball. We will also look into getting new uniforms, recruiting more unified partners, lowering the current cost to participate & maybe consider adding the sport that comes in 2nd!

Chapel Haven Schleifer Center currently offers seven Special Olympics sports – track and field, soccer, swimming, tennis, basketball, bowling and softball (both unified and traditional). On average, we have about 80 adult athletes of varying abilities participating yearly, representing a wide range of profiles, from Down Syndrome and autism to intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy. CHSC is one of the largest delegations in Special Olympics CT.
