John P. Bilezikian, MD, Ph.D (Hon)

John P. Bilezikian, MD, PhD (hon), the Dorothy L. and Daniel H. Silberberg Professor of Medicine at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University, is Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine for International Education and Research and Chief, Emeritus, of the Division of Endocrinology. He belongs to and has had leadership positions in many organizations that are dedicated to patient care, medical research, and education. These include the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR; former President), the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD; former President) the International Osteoporosis Foundation (former Director) and the Endocrine Society. He is Chair of the Endocrine Fellows Foundation. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of major medical journals such as the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. His books include The Parathyroids, The Aging Skeleton, Dynamics of Bone and Cartilage Metabolism, Principles of Bone Biology, and Osteoporosis in Men. He is Editor-in-Chief of an international compendium of all the Metabolic Bone Diseases. He has served as Co-chair of every International Workshop on diseases of the parathyroids since 2002. Continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for 50 years, he has published over 935 papers on the parathyroid disorders, vitamin D, and osteoporosis. Dr. Bilezikian has received the Distinguished Physician and Educator Awards of the Endocrine Society, and from the ASBMR, its three highest awards. From the ISCD, he received the First Annual Global Leadership Award and the Oscar Gluck Humanitarian Award. He holds two honorary PhD degrees from the Carol Davila School of Medicine in Romania and from the University of Pisa in Italy. He received the Distinguished Physician Award of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Ellis Island Congressional Medal of Honor from the United States Government, and Parliamentary Medals of Honor from the Governments of Armenia and Brazil. In 2019, he received the Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievements in Medical Research from Columbia University.
