CHSC Campus Clubs and Committees

Chapel Haven Schleifer Center offers a variety of committees and campus clubs where adults can participate, give feedback and enjoy areas of interest. See below for a listing of clubs and committees that may be of interest.

CHSC CAMPUS CLUBS

Art Guild

CHSC Art Guild

This group is comprised of any CHSC residential or community individuals who are interested in creating their own artwork, in classes or independently. The group of artists is informed and invited to participate in any art events. We do art shows for exhibition throughout our community. Artists are welcome to join in the Annual  Westville Art Walk, the JCC Holiday Fair, and our own yearly CHSC Art Show and Sale to display and sell their work along with our UArts artists. CHSC Judaism Club

Judaism Club

The Chapel Haven Shleifer Judaism Club hosts monthly events that are open to all students, regardless of their faith.  This group is for individuals who are looking to connect with their Jewish community, to practice their cultural upbringing, or simply to learn and spend time with their peers.

During the first year, a variety of events have been coordinated such as hamantaschen baking, trivia with the rabbi from our local synagogue, and a special Passover seder on campus where a custom Haggadah was created for our adults.  There are endless opportunities to connect or learn about Judaism though music, food, discussion, hands on learning and more.  Not only is a goal of this group to create a sense of unity on campus, but also to develop a connection to our local Jewish community.

As Chapel Haven Schleifer Center is a home away from home for many, it is our responsibility to honor our adults’ decision to stay connected with their faith and support them in whatever their needs may be.  Our coordinator takes pride in being the leader meeting their religious wishes.  Examples are finding walking buddies to temple, ensuring tickets are in hand for high holidays, and honoring customs or holiday meals on campus.

Candles play a major role in the Jewish world and are symbolic for a variety of different reasons.  On Shabbat, we light candles, welcoming light into our home.  As a club and as individuals, we are bringing light into the world.

L’chaim!

CHSC Pride Club

 CHSC Pride Club

Students are provided with a safe environment where they can discuss issues regarding sexual orientation, gender identity and an opportunity to step towards ending homophobia surrounding the community. The club spends time playing games, watching movies together to help the club members make friends, learning about different identities and educating  others on information regarding the community. Students are reminded that learning is an ongoing experience, so it’s okay to acknowledge that they might not know every aspect of the LGBTQ+ community; part of being a good ally is continuing your education and Chapel Haven is happy to be part of that journey.

CHSC Travel Club

Disney Hollywood Travel Club

The CHSC Travel Club works under the direction of the Recreation Department and plans fun outings and overnight trips to popular destinations, including Disney World and Niagara Falls.

CHSC COMMITTEES

CHAMP

Chapel Haven Accessibility Management and Planning Team has the following mission:

Mission: To identify and address issues of accessibility as they relate to physical and cognitive challenges, fostering a culture of access and providing education and training surrounding accessibility, while supporting physical mobility and aging in place initiatives, to be enjoyed over a lifetime by adults at Chapel Haven.

This committee comprises staff, parents, CHSC adults and consultant Renée East, MS, founder, owner and chief consultant of Personal Care Solutions in Woodbridge. CHSC staff Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo and Sunny Richards co-chair the group. The committee’s formation grew out of a generous bequest by the family of SAIL community member Andrew Burbank. When Andrew’s beloved grandmother, Gail Kagler passed away, the Kagler family directed donations be made to CHSC with a specific aim to enhance inclusion of people with physical limitations. CHAMP is an important outgrowth of this support. The committee meets regularly to ensure that CHSC remains a fully accessible community that can be enjoyed by all, with a focus on aging and mobility challenges. A project completed in 2024 comprised of installing grab bars and safety rails in all SAIL bathrooms. The committee is hosting a webinar on Jan. 29 for all CHSC parents to learn more about benefit coordination offered at CHSC and to explore entitlements that might benefit CHSC adults.

CHSC Diversity Committee

Diversity Committee Pride 2024

This is a committee comprised of a diverse group of staff and CHSC adults who provide oversight and monitoring of the cultural competency action plan and evaluate in terms of connection to the established Core Values. The committee plans many events and celebrates cultural milestones throughout the calendar year – i.e., Pride Day, Martin Luther King Service Day, Autism Awareness Day, World Down Syndrome Awareness Day, etc.

Health and Safety Committee

Chapel Haven Schleifer Center’s Health and Safety Committee is an agency wide committee with representation from all programs and departments. The function of this group is to review all safety concerns that may arise and to create plans of action to alleviate those concerns, and to be proactive in preventing them from recurring. The Health & Safety Committee ensures that OSHA, CARF Standards and DDS Regulations are met and that all individuals participate in programs that are hazard free. Specific functions to support this process are review of critical incidents, review of accidents, facility and vehicle inspections, infection control precautions and on-going staff training.
