Dr. Barbara Cook
Dr. Barbara Cook is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator in the Department of Communication Disorders at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU). She is a licensed Speech Language Pathologist, having earned her degrees in the areas of speech, language, and hearing from the State University of New York (SUNY) Plattsburgh (B.A. ’84) and SUNY New Paltz (M.S. ’89). She earned her doctoral degree in Education Leadership from SCSU in 2014. Prior to her role as an Associate Professor, Dr. Cook was an Administrative Assistant for the SCSU Center of Excellence on Autism Spectrum Disorders. In addition to co-developing the foundational curriculum for the ASAT program at Chapel Haven Schleifer Center, Dr. Cook initiated and implemented inclusive academic and social learning opportunities for the ASAT community members via a credit bearing course. Experiential learning continues through interactive groups led by peer Speech Language Pathologists and graduate student clinicians at the SCSU Center for Communication Disorders. Currently, Dr. Cook is collaborating with the SCSU Center for Academic Success and Accessibility Services to implement a program designed to support academic and social learning of college students. Her national and international presentations on the needs of college students and potential benefits of peer mentors led to publications with research colleagues in a peer-reviewed journal and professional magazines.
